Ian Lowthian

Ian was one of the first accordionists to graduate from the Royal Academy of Music, and his early music career took him from continental accordion music through early keyboard music and jazz, while running his own Scottish Dance Band. Meeting Catriona Macdonald at music college led him into the traditional music scene, and he has been performing and recording ever since. He now works in schools while running his own workshops and ceilidh band.

Another former SMG tutor, Sarah-Jane is both a tradition-bearer of the old Highland style of fiddling and a free-thinking improviser, which has led to performances with a wide variety of folk, jazz, rock and contemporary bands. She was taught by the late, great Donald Riddell and was a founder member of the Scottish chamber folk group RANT. Her albums with husband Juhani Silvola both received Top of the World status from Songlines magazine.

Mike Vass

Mike is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and arranger who has performed and collaborated with many of the leading voices in Scotland’s traditional music scene, including Malinky, Innes Watson and Mairi Campbell. He has produced a wealth of solo work, and has composed for Celtic Connections, film soundtracks and community projects. He is currently traditional artist in residence at The School of Scottish Studies…and is a former SMG tutor!

Gary West

Gary is a piper and singer, academic and broadcaster. His extensive music CV includes The Vale of Atholl Pipe Band, the Grade 1 Glasgow Police Pipe Band, Ceolbeg, Clan Alba, various collaborations and a solo album. He is chair of Traditional Arts & Culture Scotland and presents BBC Radio Scotland’s Pipeline. He currently performs with the trio BrOg, and taught whistle for several years in the early days of Scots Music Group.
