Ceilidh FAQs

I don’t have a partner to dance with…can I come along on my own?

Yes! There is no need to bring a partner. All our ceilidhs are relaxed and welcoming, so whether you come alone or with friends, we’ll soon have you birling on the dance floor!


I’ve never been to a ceilidh before….how will I know what to do?

At Scots Music Group ceilidhs, our bands have experienced callers who will walk you through each dance before you start.


What should I wear?

Our ceilidhs are informal, so wear clothing you are comfortable in. Layers are good idea as it can get very warm with all the dancing. Oh yeah…and sensible shoes. Heels are not recommended!


Can I bring children or teenagers?

Since the venue is a community centre, children are welcome, so long as they are not in the bar area. Bear in mind that ceilidhs can get quite energetic, so they may be less suitable for younger children. Children aged 5 to 16 are charged at the concession price. Under 5s get in free but need to be issued a ticket, so please contact the SMG office by phone or email to ask for a child’s ticket.


Could I reserve a table?

For groups of 10 or more people we can reserve tables for you until 8.15pm. Please email the SMG office at least 10 days before the ceilidh you are attending with your details.


Who is eligible to buy a concession ticket?

Concession rate applies to students, pensioners, people receiving benefits, jobseekers/unemployed, unwaged (e.g. carer, stay at home parent), and children aged 5 to 16.


What payment method can I use to purchase tickets?

For online tickets you can pay by credit card, debit card or using a PayPal account. On the door tickets can only be paid for by cash. The closest cashpoint to St Bride’s is at the Co-op on Dalry Road.


Do I need to print bring a printed ticket with me?

No, you don’t need to bring a printed ticket to gain entry to the ceilidh. If you have purchased a ticket online we will have a note of your name which you need to give to the box office volunteers. However you may be asked for id and/or to show proof of purchase.


What does ‘Online Sale Ended’ mean?

If you are trying to buy a ticket online before 4pm on the day of a ceilidh and you see this message, then our online tickets are sold out. You may wish to contact the SMG office to ask if there will be any tickets available on the door. Please note that the SMG office is not open on Fridays & Saturdays.


On the day of a ceilidh what time do the ticket sales stop on your website?

You can purchase tickets through the SMG website until 4pm on the day of a ceilidh. Any unsold tickets will be available to buy in person when doors open at St Bride’s at 7.30pm, on a first come first served basis.  Please purchase in advance to avoid disappointment as our ceilidhs often sell out!

If online sales have ended before 4pm we have sold out of our online allocation. There may however be a small number to purchase on the door.


How can I buy a ticket after 4pm on the day of a ceilidh?

If we have any unsold tickets they will available to buy on a first come first served basis so come along to St Bride’s at 7.30pm when doors open. We try and update the SMG Facebook page with ticket availability so check our page to see if we’re sold out or not.


Can I get a refund for my ceilidh ticket?

Unfortunately not. Similar to most concert venues and other regular Edinburgh ceilidhs, our tickets are not refundable or exchangeable for another event – not least as these ceilidhs are also fundraising events for SMG. At a sold out ceilidh we’re happy for you to resell your excess tickets yourself. However our ceilidh volunteers are unable to resell tickets on your behalf.
