Neil MacGregor
Neil MacGregor was born and brought up in Edinburgh with MacGregor connections to Strathspey and upper Deeside. In the mid 1980s he started playing in sessions in the back room of Stewarts and in Sandy Bell’s, and along the way he learned much from Ian Grant and Jimmy Greenan, both excellent traditional musicians.
He used to compete on the moothie at Newcastletown and Keith, and managed to get into the “magic circle” with a second place at Keith. He also played in the less serious competitions, such as the instrumental pairs and ceilidh band.
Over the last twenty years Neil has done a lot of field recording for the School of Scottish Studies, mostly in Perthshire and Strathspey, and has also researched and written papers for the Gaelic Society of Inverness. Apart from this, he runs a wee record shop in St Stephen Street – open a day and a half a week – and also teach part-time at St Mary’s Music School – Gaelic, and any other subject required.
