Hear the tune: The Jig Formerly Known as Plinth

Ros Gasson, the Scots Music Group’s Development Worker, played her fiddle for an hour on the ‘One and Other’ plinthbetween midnight on Saturday 12th September and 1am on Sunday 13th. ‘One & Other’ is a live artwork by sculptor Antony Gormley. 2,400 participants representing every region of the UK each spend an hour on the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square. The project will run for 100 days and nights.

‘One and Other’ are filming everyone who is on the plinth – their recordings are streamed live on their website, 24 hours a day.

Along with sharing some traditional music, Ros was raising money for charity, as part of her hour on the plinth. Would you like to be a part of this huge arts project, and help raise funds for a good cause? We have commissioned Sarah Northcott, one of the Scots Music Group’s longstanding tutors, to write a new tune for the plinth. Ros played the new tune from the plinth top. We launched an online auction for the right to name the tune, as Ros left the plinth. The auction will run for one week, closing at 1am on Sunday 20th September. The winner will be able to name the tune in any way they wish. It could be a great opportunity for someone to mark a significant event, or to create a unique gift for someone by naming the tune after them.

Ros is inviting you to pledge your donation to a charity of your choice. The person pledging the largest donation will have the right to name the tune. The written music for the tune, along with its name, will be published on the SMG website after the auction, and the person making the winning bid will receive a recorded copy of the tune. The Scots Music Group will also include the tune in the publication of their next tune book.
